The sister instrument to the balalaika, the domra, can be three or four stringed and has a round shape. Various sizes of the instrument produce a range of notes. So an alto balalaika could be lower to a C or maybe even lower on the bottom two strings and then the top would be a G or lower. Zhivago, the balalaika is a three stringed instrument with a distinctive triangular body. I'm thinking of getting an alto or prima balalaika but I want to know if it is possible to tune it lower with thicker strings.
